Go to the Generate tab. Type the book title (and optionally the author) in the fields. Optionally paste highlights, notes, or excerpts in the Context field. Tap ✦ Generate Summary. It takes 8–15 seconds depending on your connection.

This is optional but powerful. Paste your own highlights, Kindle notes, excerpts, or even a full chapter — Gemini's 1M token context window can handle it. When context is present, the summary reflects your specific reading of the book rather than a general overview. You can also use the Import PDF button to load a .pdf, .txt, or .md file directly.

Switch to Document mode (the toggle at the top of the Generate tab) to work with articles, reports, meeting notes, or any text — not just books. You can either generate a full structured summary of the document, or use Direct Read-back to have it narrated aloud immediately without any AI summarization step.

Most failures are one of three things: (1) Invalid or missing API key — check ⚙ Settings and make sure your key is saved. (2) Rate limit — the free Gemini tier has a per-minute quota; wait 30 seconds and try again. (3) Ambiguous title — try adding the author name or a bit of context so Gemini identifies the right book. If the summary looks like a different book entirely, the title was likely matched to something else.

Quick Summary — A 2–4 minute narration of the book's audio script. One API call, fastest to generate. Good for a rapid refresher.

Chapters — Each section of the summary (Introduction, Pillars, Deep Dive, Actions, Quotes) is generated as a separate audio track. You can generate them one at a time or all at once. Chapters auto-advance when one ends.

Deep Dive — A 1,200–1,500 word narration built from scratch by Gemini, covering every part of the summary in flowing prose. The most immersive option at 12–20 minutes. Requires two API calls (script + TTS).

The four voices are real Gemini TTS neural voices sent directly to Google's API — not browser speech synthesis.

Aoede ♀ — Warm, expressive, slightly breathy. Best for narrative and personal development books.
Orus ♂ — Firm, decisive, clean articulation. Best for business and non-fiction.
Charon ♂ — Deep, measured, authoritative. Best for serious or dense material.
Kore ♀ — Firm, precise, professional. Best for structured or technical content.

The WAV button is only available once audio has been generated for the current book. Go to the Audio tab, choose a mode (Quick, Chapters, or Deep Dive), and tap Generate. Once audio exists, the WAV button enables and exports the best available file — or whichever file is currently playing.

Yes — BRVTY implements the Web Media Session API. Once audio is playing, your lock screen controls, car Bluetooth buttons, and AirPods/headphone controls all work: play/pause, skip back 15 seconds, skip forward 15 seconds, and previous/next chapter.

Tap the 🚗 icon in the top bar to enter Car Mode — a fullscreen player with large controls designed for glanceable use while driving. The progress bar, title, and chapter label are shown in large text. Your hardware media controls still work in Car Mode. Tap ✕ Exit or press the back button to return to the normal interface.

The sleep timer on the Audio tab automatically pauses playback after your chosen duration (15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes). When the timer expires, audio fades out smoothly over 2 seconds before pausing — so it doesn't jolt you awake if you've drifted off. A countdown shows the time remaining. Tap ✕ Cancel to cancel it early.

Go to the Audiobooks tab and tap ＋ Import Audio Files. BRVTY supports MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, and OGG files. Files are stored entirely in your browser's IndexedDB — no upload to any server. On desktop Chrome/Edge, you can also select multiple files at once.

While an audiobook is playing, tap the 🔖 bookmark icon in the player controls. This opens the note input in the shelf row — add an optional note (e.g. "great quote here") and tap Mark. The timestamp is saved and appears as a tappable pill below the track. Tap any timestamp pill to jump back to that exact moment.

Browsers limit IndexedDB to roughly 20–50% of available disk space (varies by browser and device). BRVTY warns you when usage approaches 120MB. Audio files — especially Deep Dive narrations and imported audiobooks — consume the most space. If you're running low, export your vault as a backup, then clear old books you no longer need from the Library tab.

Go to ⚙ Settings → Library Vault → Export Vault. This creates a .folio file containing all your summaries, audio, chapters, notes, and cover art. To restore or transfer to another device, tap Import Vault and select your .folio file. Duplicate books are automatically skipped.

Swipe any book row to the left to reveal the red Delete button. Tap Delete to confirm removal. The confirmation dialog gives you a chance to cancel. Swipe right or tap elsewhere to dismiss without deleting.

Filter pills (All / Books / Documents) — show only books generated from titles, or only documents imported via Document Mode.

Sort options:
• Recent — newest first (default)
• Title / Author — alphabetical
• Genre — alphabetical by primary genre
• Audio — books with generated audio first
• Level — by reading difficulty (Accessible → Dense)

Your sort preference is saved and restored between sessions.

Tap ⬆️ in the Library header to open the Share modal. Select one or more books, then:

📸 Export PNG — generates a marketing card image you can share on social media.
📦 Export JSON — exports the selected books as a .json file that anyone with BRVTY can import via Vault Import.

Go to ⚙ Settings → Reading Experience.

Text Size: A− (compact), A (default), A+ (large). Changes the size of pillar descriptions, deep dive text, and action items in the Summary view.

Reading Font: Cormorant Garamond (elegant editorial serif), Inter (clean sans-serif), or Georgia (warm traditional serif). The monospace UI stays in DM Mono regardless of this setting.

Go to ⚙ Settings → Appearance → Light Theme and toggle it on. Your theme preference is saved automatically. The light theme adjusts all surfaces, borders, and text colors — including the topbar and modal sheets.

At the bottom of every Summary, BRVTY suggests 3 related books based on the content and themes of the one you just read. Tap Load → next to any suggestion to pre-fill the Generate tab with that title and trigger a summary automatically. Tap the Buy on Amazon button to find the book (if you've added your Amazon Associates tag in Settings, purchases support you).

1. Check your API key — go to ⚙ Settings and confirm your Gemini key is saved correctly (starts with AIza).

2. Rate limit — the free tier allows a limited number of TTS calls per minute. Wait 30–60 seconds and try again.

3. Text too long — Quick Summary uses the pre-generated audio script. If that's empty, regenerate the book summary first.

4. Network issue — check your connection. The offline banner at the top of the screen will appear if BRVTY detects no internet.

BRVTY stores everything in your browser's IndexedDB, which is part of the browser's site data. Clearing "cookies and site data" in your browser settings will erase your library. Always export a Vault backup before clearing browser data. If you have a .folio file, you can restore everything via ⚙ Settings → Import Vault.

A 5-second safety timeout will always force the splash away even if there's an error during startup. If you're seeing it longer than that, try a hard refresh (hold Shift and tap Reload on desktop, or close and reopen the app on mobile). If the problem persists, clearing the site data and reinstalling the PWA usually resolves it — export your Vault first if you have data you want to keep.

Lock screen controls (Media Session API) appear automatically once audio starts playing. On iOS, this requires BRVTY to be installed as a PWA (Add to Home Screen) — Safari's lock screen controls don't always work in the browser tab. On Android, they work in both Chrome browser and installed PWA mode. Make sure your device's notification permissions allow media controls.

BRVTY fetches cover art from Open Library (openlibrary.org) by title and ISBN. Coverage is good but not complete — obscure or very new books may not have covers. Make sure Book Covers is enabled in ⚙ Settings → Playback. You can also set a custom cover by tapping the cover placeholder in the audiobook shelf and choosing a URL or local image.
